First Peoples (Indigenous Australians)

Essential Historical Milestones

  • 1788 (26 January): First Fleet arrives at Sydney Cove under Captain Arthur Phillip (celebrated as Australia Day).

  • 1901 (1 January): Federation — 6 separate British colonies unite to form the Commonwealth of Australia.

Freedoms, Equality & Civic Duties

Core Democratic Freedoms

  • Freedom of Speech & Expression: Freedom to express opinions and ideas peacefully within the law.
  • Freedom of Association: Right to gather and join any legal organization, party, or union.
  • Freedom of Religion: Freedom to practice any faith or no religion. The government is secular and has no state church.

Equality Under the Law

All people in Australia are equal before the law. Men and women have equal rights in marriage, work, education, and society.

Mandatory Responsibilities of Citizens

  • Obey Australian laws passed by parliaments.
  • Vote in elections: Compulsory voting at federal, state, and territory levels and referendums.
  • Serve on a jury if called upon.
  • Defend Australia should the need arise.

Parliament, Constitution & Courts

System of Government & Constitution

Australia is a Constitutional Monarchy, a Parliamentary Democracy, and a Federation. The Australian Constitution is the supreme legal document and can only be changed by a referendum (requiring a double majority).

Head of State vs. Head of Government

  • Head of State: King Charles III (represented in Australia by the Governor-General).
  • Head of Government: The Prime Minister (leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives).

Federal Parliament (Two Houses)

  • House of Representatives (Green): 151 Members of Parliament representing electorates.
  • Senate (Red): 76 Senators (12 per state, 2 per territory) representing state interests.

Three Levels of Government

  • Federal: Defence, immigration, trade, taxation, foreign affairs, currency, Medicare.
  • State / Territory: Police, public hospitals, schools, roads, public transport, railways.

No person or organization is above the law. Disagreements must be settled peacefully through democratic and legal channels, never through violence or intimidation.

Helping neighbors and fellow community members in times of natural disasters, bushfires, floods, or hardships.
