1. General Eligibility Requirements (Citizenship by Conferral)
Most applicants apply for Australian citizenship by conferral. To be eligible, you generally must meet the following criteria:
- Permanent Resident Status: You must be an Australian permanent resident (or eligible New Zealand citizen).
- General Residence Requirement: You must have lived in Australia on a valid Australian visa for at least 4 years immediately before applying.
- 12 Months PR Requirement: You must have been a permanent resident for at least 12 months immediately before applying.
- Absences from Australia: You must not have been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in the past 4 years, and no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying.
- Good Character: You must pass national police character checks.
2. What to Bring to Your Test Appointment
You must bring original identity documents to your appointment at the Department of Home Affairs test center:
- Official Appointment Letter: Printed or accessible on your phone.
- Current Valid Passport: Your original passport used for identification.
- Photo Identity Document: Driver licence, Proof of Age card, or national identity card.
- Proof of Address: Official utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement showing your full name and current residential address.
- Translating & Interpreting Service Documents (if applicable): Official NAATI certified translations of any foreign language certificates.
3. What Happens Inside the Test Room
Identity Check & Photo
Upon arrival, an officer verifies your original documents, takes your photograph, and assigns you to a private computer testing booth.
Touchscreen Test Station
You complete the 20 multiple-choice questions on a touchscreen computer terminal. You can change your answers or flag questions to review before clicking final submit.
Instant Results Printout
Immediately after you finish the test, your score appears on the screen. The test supervisor provides an official printed result slip showing your percentage score.
Re-Sit Policy
If you do not pass, there is no financial penalty. In many centers you may re-sit later the same day if time permits, or Home Affairs will reschedule your appointment.
4. The Australian Citizenship Ceremony & Pledge
Passing the test is the final assessment step before your application is approved. Once approved, you will be invited to attend a public Citizenship Ceremony (usually held by your local municipal council within 3 to 6 months).
The Australian Citizenship Pledge
"From this time forward, [under God], I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey."
After saying the Pledge, you receive your official Australian Citizenship Certificate and become a full citizen of Australia.
